THE TOP STORY: Bolling, Connaughton debate taxes
By Chris Graham/AFP  It isn't just Tim Kaine and Jerry Kilgore debating the other's record on taxes and spending. "It's tough for Republican voters to support Sean Connaughton when he agrees with Tim Kaine on all the major tax issues," said Randy Marcus, the campaign manager for Mechanicsville Sen. Bill Bolling, who is locked in a tight battle for the Republican Party's lieutenant-governor nomination with Connaughton ...

INSIDE ... Inside the filibuster compromise
By Chris Graham/AFP  Republicans had a clear motive that had them pushing the Senate to the nuclear brink. By Chris Graham/AFP
A Richmond-based preservation group has listed the Zirkle Mill in Shenandoah County on its list of the 11 most endangered historic properties. "We see this as an instance where the removal of the mill from its current location could end up having a negative effect not only on the mill itself, but on the community as a whole," said Elizabeth Kostelny, executive director of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities ...

You have to take it to the people," presumptive Democratic Party attorney-general nominee Creigh Deeds told The Augusta Free Press last week, answering a question as to how Democratic candidates can win elections in red state Virginia. "There was a time when this was a Democratic state. Politics was a little different then ..."

Our View

We have complained - often - about the sometimes-bitter divide that we've seen between the news media and the general population, in particular those members of the general population who seem to uncover bias behind every headline, whether it's actually there or not.

Now we have to say that we're beginning to think that more and more people are getting it.

Sure, there are biased reporters, biased news organizations - and biased observers bent on fitting everybody in the media game into their worldviews as either enemies of the state or fair and balanced.

There always will be.

But by and large, the observers just want to know what's going on - and the reporters and news organizations just want to tell them.

There are many, many complicating factors - deadline pressures, market saturation, experience or inexperience, downright orneriness, etc.

The bottom line is that we all really are in this together - whether this is the Clinton impeachment, the Iraq war, the steroid scandal or the 2005 Virginia gubernatorial election.

It's good to see that more of us are starting to act like this is the case.
