January 23, 2001Welcome salute
I stayed up late Friday night watching a replay of the "Tribute to Veterans," traditionally a party for the vice president-elect. Dick Cheney chose to use that celebration for a salute to veterans, a refreshing substance over symbolism for a change.
The tribute brought out goose bumps because it was the first act of sincerity I'd seen in politics in eight years. It was also the first sense of dignity, the first gathering of patriots, the first giving of the limelight rather than basking in it, the first reflection of values rather than indignity, and the first heartfelt patriotic music and ceremony in eight years.
I got the wonderful feeling that our military and our nation is returning to a dedication to duty, honor and country that will be led by a commander in chief of courage rather than of cowardice.
It's been a long eight years, but I am convinced that the damage can be undone. God Bless America!
