Speak Out

Speak Out ... Smothering ourselves

04-08-2007

How and why is global warming increasing?

We are hundreds of years late in starting to take notice of things that should have been observed. God has said of His people, hearing they shall hear and not understand, seeing they shall see and not perceive.

God made the forestation of the Earth sufficient for man's need but not for his greed. Millions of acres of forests are destroyed each year, and an inestimatable amount of land is cleared, not necessarily for need but for pride and greed. It takes 50 years to grow a tree large enough for building houses, while houses that are torn down, piled up and burned could provide enough material to build many structures. Read Luke 12:16-25.

Happiness and success are simpler than many of us are willing to settle for. Imagine walking or riding through millions of miles of cool shade, and then imagine how hot that same distance would be if there were no trees. When a breeze blows over millions of miles of blacktop or cement which radiates heat into the air, what once was shady becomes stifling. The trees and forestation that have been destroyed are vital to the air we breathe. Consider the millions of miles of multi-laned highways, the millions of acres of sidewalks, patios, malls and playgrounds and what has been a part of that which seems to have escaped our attention.

Stop the waste and covering of nature's provision. In this I am reminded of David's statement, and perhaps some of us will admit it, our sin is ever before us.

War and hypocrisy

Re “Judging hypocrisy” (Speak Out March 28):

Letter writer Douglas Roy warns that “Jesus is coming again to judge and rule the entire world in righteousness.”

Until then, it appears that Roy has assumed the role of self-ordained judge of his fellow man, Philip Rowe, for Rowe's belief in the conduct of war for protection of our freedoms.

To Rowe, Roy piously sermonizes, “It is this kind of hypocrisy Jesus is coming to judge. Jesus is against wars of men. No matter what euphemism you give it, war is killing and maiming and corrupting men, women and children, stealing and destroying property because of greed, lust, hate, intolerance and covetousness.”

Rowe certainly owes Roy his gratitude for Roy's unbeknowingly nailing the point of his own letter in question, “The Iraq War and Jesus.”

And Roy owes World War II for his freedom to express his opinion, no matter how brilliant or stupid.

Trial lawyers' name change

What would you do if your actions caused your name to become synonymous with greed, selfishness, crookedness and deceit? What if you were ranked in the lowest order of professional respect in the nation? What if your name had become a subject of jokes and scorn? Would you change your ways?

Not if you're a wealthy Alabama personal-injury trial lawyer. Alabama Voters Against Lawsuit Abuse learned the Alabama Association of Trial Lawyers recently voted to re-name itself the Alabama Association for Justice. These crafty folks, having tarnished their names, simply decided to start calling themselves something else.

In every Alabama judicial election in recent years, they and their operatives have been guilty of things that can only be described with one word: sleazy. Now they're pushing one-sided legislation in the form of a bipartisan election effort that would give them undue influence on how statewide judges gain office.

They can call themselves anything they wish, but they're the same wealthy personal-injury trial lawyers who have tried for years to regain control of the Alabama Supreme Court they once rode like a horse and milked like a cow.

Let's give the association formerly known as Trial Lawyers its own symbol: ($).

For the record

In the South, 49 percent of African-Americans are married and have incomes slightly higher than their married counterparts in the North. The data was incorrect in last Sunday's H. Brandt Ayers column.
