ALL IS not well in the efforts of Marion Military Institute trying to move to Fort McClellan. The Joint Powers Authority must know the following facts: At MMI’s last Alumni Weekend on 23-24 April 1999 at a meeting in the chapel over 200 people (alumni and parents) raised their hands to keep MMI in Marion.

Only six people raised their hands for MMI to move to Fort McClellan.

Had retired Gen. Adams (MMI President) and Mr. Cheney (Chairman of the Board of Trustees) put forth the effort to mobilize the alumni the school would not be in the situation it is in now!

The fact is that most alumni want MMI to stay in Marion. Fact is, no parent wants to put their kid placed in harm’s way where there is over 2,000 tons of chemical munitions and the military plans on bringing in more chemical munitions.

Gen. Adams and Mr. Cheney do not want to talk to or listen to the majority of the alumni.

It is understood that a study on moving MMI to Fort McClellan will be completed and presented to the MMI Board of Trustees around the end of June.

A number of firms have been asked to provide input to the study, but no firm has yet to survey the alumni or parents of the students on their thoughts or to get their opinion on the move. Only the Board of Trustees will see the study, no other individuals.

These are only some of the facts.

Again I tell you, all is not well in the efforts of moving MMI to Fort McClellan!

Seat belts

I’M EAGER to read the new law concerning seat belts and whether our elected officials considered our precious babes. Needless to say, I’ve followed along, like cows to slaughter, until while visiting in California, I discovered their school buses have no seat belts for their precious children and neither does Alabama.

How do parents answer their children when they ask Mama? Daddy?

Why do we have to wear seat belts in our car and not when we ride the school bus? God help us all, it’s the almighty dollar!

Trash day

AS A taxpayer in the city of Anniston, it would be very nice of the city if it could inform us what week, day, or year it is going to pick up tree limbs and debris.

We do not like to have our lawns ruined and the sight of trash piled up in front of our house.

If you live in Ward 1, be sure to have a map handy to explain where you live to your councilperson as he doesn’t seem to be very familiar with the city of Anniston.

I would like to thank other council people for their help in getting my debris picked up.

New name

Yep, let’s hurry up and rename McClellan Boulevard. Ain’t nothing left on that post to fleece. And better yet, let’s name it for us fine citizens who are so vocal. Something like “Bubba Blvd.” or “Redneck Road.”
