THE TOP STORY: Fitch to enter GOP race
By Chris Graham/AFP  It's official ... almost. Warrenton mayor George Fitch confirmed on Monday that he will formally enter the Republican Party gubernatorial-nomination race this week. Fitch has scheduled a news conference for Wednesday morning in Norfolk to announce his candidacy for the party nod. The fiscal conservative could make things interesting for nomination-race frontrunner Jerry Kilgore ...

INSIDE ... One critic left behind
By Chris Graham/AFP  Is the Virginia General Assembly considering silencing a Virginia pol who writes columns for a number of state newspapers and Web sites, including The Augusta Free Press? "No, I don't think it is any effort to silence me. It's just that I've laid so many whippings on them in public, and in print, I'm sure they'd like to get a lick in on me once in a while," said Barnie Day ...

IN FOCUS: Fighting the marriage-amendment battle
By Chris Graham/AFP  The Virginia General Assembly seems well on its way to passing constitutional amendments to define marriage as being between one man and one woman - which would effectively prohibit gays and lesbians from being able to enter into the marriage contract in the Commonwealth. But it's not as easy as just having lawmakers agree on a single up-or-down vote.

Mount Solon Republican Sen. Emmett Hanger is a firm supporter of Virginia's campaign-finance system that emphasizes disclosure at the expense of placing upper limits on the amount of money that individuals and political-action committees can give candidates. "We're going to see me put this limit issue to the test with my statewide campaign," said Hanger ...

EYE ON THE VALLEY: Legal wrangling
By Chris Graham/AFP  The Staunton city charter gives Staunton City Council the power to "control and manage the fiscal and municipal affairs of the city" and to "pass all bylaws, rules and ordinances not repugnant to the Constitution and laws of the state" deemed necessary to "the conduct of its fiscal and municipal affairs" - in addition to establishing that "all moneys received or collected for the use of the city ..."

The first pitch in December had a Harrisonburg-based group trying to sell the Friendly City on the merits of a public-private project to develop a multimillion-dollar sports complex on Port Republic Road that would include a minor-league baseball stadium. The second pitch ... never came. The Monday deadline for developers to submit proposals ...

EYE ON THE VALLEY: City focusing on doing streetscape work in-house
By Chris Graham/AFP  Waynesboro government leaders are now focused on looking at what needs to be done to accomplish the downtown-streetscape improvement project in-house. "We have decided to let the bidders go. At this point, we intend to pursue doing this ourselves," city manager Doug Walker told The Augusta Free Press on Friday.

THE NOTEBOOK: Teen injured in collision with street sweeper
By Chris Graham/AFP  A Waynesboro teen was injured in a Monday-morning accident on Second Street involving a street sweeper. The unidentified 17-year-old driver was transported to Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville as a result of the injuries sustained in the 8:04 a.m. collision on the 700 block of Second Street, a Waynesboro Police Department spokesman said Monday afternoon.

Lost in translation

It appears that a recent new Bible translation is upsetting some folks. Today's New International Version has just been published by Zondervan Publishing and is meant for adults in the 18- to 34-year-old demographic.

In this new translation, some masculine references are made more gender-neutral.

For example, Genesis 1:27, "so God created man in his own image," in the more traditional New International Version is changed in TNIV to "so God created human beings in his own image."

Wouldn't folks agree that the translation "so God created man in her own image" serves the intended purpose?
