INSIDE ... The politics of church and state
By Chris Graham/AFP  Prayers at the start of government meetings are innocent, right? It's just a ritual, like saying grace at the dinner table. There's nothing more to it. You can think that way - but those on the left and right who are fighting politically to define how those prayers can be offered will blow by you on the way to where they're going with the issue. (Part two of a two-part series)

IN FOCUS: Staunton getting back on fiscal footing
By Chris Graham/AFP  A lawsuit over a February move to give sweeping powers of discretion over financial matters to the city finance office appears to be coming down the pike. As does a bill for $150,000 related to the scrapping of a software system used by the treasurer and revenue offices that didn't work, to hear the software developer tell the story, because the commissioner of revenue wouldn't play ball.

NOTES FROM THE PRESS: Virginia politics notebook
By Chris Graham/AFP  The United Mine Workers of America announced on Monday that it was endorsing presumptive Democratic Party gubernatorial nominee Tim Kaine for governor. The move came at the recommendation of the Virginia State Council COMPAC, a grassroots program of union members. "I am honored that the United Mine Workers of America have once again chosen to support ..."

EYE ON VIRGINIA: Guilt by association
By Chris Graham/AFP  Christian evangelist and broadcaster Pat Robertson thinks that former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani would make a good president. And that Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback would make a good president. Robertson also offered on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday that he sees Virginia Sen. George Allen making a good president. And then Robertson said something else that Messrs. Giuliani, Brownback and Allen might not have wanted their names linked to.

EYE ON VIRGINIA: Acc-ent to grind
By Chris Graham/AFP  Was Tim Kaine mocking Jerry Kilgore's Southwest Virginia accent in a radio commercial calling the former attorney general to the carpet for using "slick radio announcers" to attack him on the air? Kilgore seems to think so - and has put his money where his mouth is to try to prove the point. The Republican's gubernatorial campaign announced on Monday that it had placed ads in rural newspapers ...

EYE ON THE VALLEY: Work on streetscape project to begin later this month
By Chris Graham/AFP  Downtown Waynesboro has been waiting for this news for five years. "Work on phase one of the streetscape project will begin on Monday, May 23," assistant city manager Mike Hamp said on Monday, confirming a date for the start of the toil toward the beginning of improvements to the overall appearance of the central-business district.

EYE ON THE VALLEY: For the good of small business
By Chris Graham/AFP  It seems a logical combination - a small-business incubator and a small-business development center. But it took a little cajoling to get NewBiz Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley Small Business Development Center together. "Our board of directors has been looking for ways that we can refocus on helping small businesses get started ..."

Left at the altar

Some feel that a larger question looms concerning the missing Jennifer Wilbanks, who left her soon-to-be husband at the altar - will what happened in Las Vegas really stay in Las Vegas?

- Armond Simmons, Pell City, Ala.

Leave Fonda alone

As a former United States Navy enlisted who served in Vietnam, I was outraged at Jane Fonda's comments and actions. But come on, people, she's human.

Did Christ not say you who have not sinned cast the first stone? Ms. Fonda has become an actress of outstanding caliber, and deserves to put her mistakes behind her as we put our past horrible mistakes to rest.

She lives with her regrets each day of her life. Leave her alone.

- Connie Woodard
