THE TOP STORY: Dirty tricks? By Chris
Graham/AFP Winchester Sen. Russ Potts has an
idea as to why Virginia Republicans have had him in their crosshairs
since he confirmed in February that he plans to run for governor as
an independent. It all has to do with Republican Party of Virginia
chair Kate Obenshain Griffin. "Nobody talks about the obvious
conflict of interest here of having Kate Griffin out demanding that
I resign my seat ..."
INSIDE ... Is the energy bill the answer to what ails
us? By Chris Graham/AFP
Critics of the energy bill currently up for review in the United
States Senate stake their position on the notion that the
legislation will do little to lower prices at the gas pump either in
the short term or the long term. Sixth District Rep. Bob Goodlatte
has a ready reply for those who offer that argument. "Not to do this
because it won't have an effect on gas prices today will only make
the problem worse down the road ..."
IN FOCUS: Mum's the word on concert-choir
trip By Chris Graham/AFP The
newspaper headlines and television-news soundbites have focused on
what Waynesboro school superintendent Lowell Lemons won't share
publicly regarding the status of the investigation of the activities
of two Waynesboro High School employees on a recent trip with the
school's concert choir to New York City. What gets buried in those
reports is why Lemons can't do more than acknowledge that the
investigation is continuing.
NOTES FROM THE PRESS: Evaluation
season By Chris Graham/AFP The
Virginia Hunting Dog Owners' Association last week released its
endorsements in several key statewide primary races. The sportsmen's
association gave the nod to former attorney general Jerry Kilgore in
his race with Warrenton mayor George Fitch for the Republican Party
gubernatorial nomination. Also on the GOP side of the ledger, the
association endorsed Mechanicsville Sen. Bill Bolling

EYE ON VIRGINIA: Petersen, rivals discuss tax
relief By Chris Graham/AFP Chap
Petersen is trying to get a leg up on his rivals for the Democratic
Party lieutenant-governor nomination. "Taxes will be the big issue
in this primary and in the general election. Working within the
Virginia tradition of fiscally conservative government and a fair
and equal tax system is absolutely critical," the Fairfax delegate
told The Augusta Free Press on Thursday, hours after
unveiling his tax-relief plan ...
EYE ON THE VALLEY: Staunton honored for water-quality
efforts By Chris Graham/AFP You
turn the tap, and the water comes out. You're happy. And you don't
give a nanosecond of consideration to how the water got into your
house. That's Chris Dewald's job. "We come in and do our jobs every
day. We have two shifts of people coming in here 24 hours a day,
seven days a week, 365 days a year. This is a nice recognition for
all the hard work that the people who work here ..."

environmental-impact statement that is to serve as a guide for
possible future improvements to Interstate 81 in Western Virginia
was supposed to be ready for release in the spring of 2005. Ahem.
It's the spring of 2005, and now the word from the Virginia
Department of Transportation is that it could be the fall before the
statement is ready for public review.

Embedded, aided and abetted
Kevin Sites, a cameraman with the NBC television network,
embedded with the United States Marines, recorded footage of
a marine who shot an Iraqi terrorist in a mosque.
Fortunately, the Marine won't face charges.
Unfortunately, one can only guess as to how many Coalition forces
will die in the future due to a hesitancy to react to terrorists'
threats as a result of the notoriety of this officious and intrusive
embedded baggage.
As many have predicted, embedded media completes the enemy
encirclement of our coalition forces, aiding and abetting the
terrorists while remaining protected by the heavy armor of immunity.
