THE TOP STORY: Tax cuts and the
economy By Chris Graham/AFP The
argument of the supply-siders seems to have long since carried the
day. Tax cuts lead to economic growth; tax increases lead to
economic stagnation. And then you consider the current economic
situation in Virginia - where a bipartisan political coalition
agreed to more than $1 billion in tax increases in
2004.
INSIDE ... Kaine aiming for more of the
same By Chris Graham/AFP His
campaign staff termed it a major policy announcement, but the
rollout of the first installment of Tim Kaine's economic agenda last
week came across as being something that was more than vaguely
familiar. "We need to continue the successful management reforms of
this administration," said Kaine, the state's lieutenant governor
and the Democratic Party's presumptive gubernatorial nominee, in a
conference call with reporters ...
IN FOCUS: Valley turns out for derby
classic By Chris Graham/AFP Kylie
Miller had her strategy all mapped out. "Just to do well and do what
my dad told me to do," said Miller, who competed in her third Blue
Ridge Classic Soap Box Derby in Waynesboro on Saturday. Miller was
one of 128 youngsters competing for one of five slots in the
All-American Soap Box Derby that were up for grabs in the 12th
annual River City competition.
NOTES FROM THE PRESS: Politics-season news and
notes By Chris Graham/AFP A
television ad paid for by the Republican Governors Association
accuses presumptive Democratic Party gubernatorial nominee Tim Kaine
of raising taxes as Richmond's mayor - and warns Virginia taxpayers
that they had "better hang onto" their wallets. The Kaine campaign
retorted by pointing out that the co-chairs of the RGA

EYE ON VIRGINIA: Deeds lays out AG
agenda By Chris Graham/AFP Creigh
Deeds isn't all that much interested in talking politics. The Bath
County state senator is focused squarely on November - no matter who
it is that ends up getting the Republican Party attorney-general
nomination. "Let those other guys nominate a candidate, and you'll
see the differences," said Deeds, the presumptive Democratic Party
attorney-general nominee ...
FACT OR FICTION: Will streetscape work be a benefit to
Waynesboro? By Chris Graham/AFP Be
careful what you wish for, because you just might get it. In the
case of downtown Waynesboro, it involves the closing off of
one lane of travel in the heart of the central-business district for
seven to nine weeks and the constant sound of jackhammers as work
begins this morning on a $525,000 project to improve the West Main
streetscape.

Whine time
In a speech last week, President Vicente Fox praised the
dedication of Mexicans working in the United States, saying they're
willing to take jobs that "even blacks" won't do.
Of course, this prompted the opportunistic, rabidly radical
racist reverends Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton to find the nearest
TV camera to opine (whine). Even the State Department immediately
scurried to join Jesse and Al in describing the statement as "very
insensitive and inappropriate."
To most U.S. citizens, Jesse's and Al's protestation is the usual
adulterated folly. Even the archbishop of Mexico City stated, "The
declaration had nothing to do with racism. It is a reality in the
United States that anyone can prove."
I'd hate to think of the mayhem that would result at the behest
of Jesse and Al if, say, the leader of an Asian country were to
praise the dedication of Asians in our country who tend to apply
themselves as better students than blacks - and whites.
I would hope that Jesse and Al, rather than saturate the airwaves
with their usual damnatory rhetoric, just ask a white dude his
advice on solving this racial problem that they both share.
His advice? Probably to study harder or shut up.
