THE TOP STORY: Trading post By Chris
Graham/AFP Gov. Mark Warner has come under
fire in recent weeks for his busy economic-development-focused
travel schedule. The men who are vying for his job see the criticism
as unfair - and say they will do their part to follow in the
governor's globetrotting footsteps. "It is clearly the case that
Virginia is participating in an international economy, in a global
economy ..."
INSIDE ... Where does Allen stand in '08
race? By Chris Graham/AFP One
question being asked by those around the politics watercooler has to
do with George Allen's chances at winning the 2008 Republican Party
presidential nomination. With two of his main rivals for the
nomination - Arizona Sen. John McCain and Senate Majority Leader
Bill Frist - each playing key roles in the resolution of The Great
2005 Judicial Filibuster Debate, one could say that the Virginia
senator's stock would be expected to take a bearish
tumble.
IN FOCUS: A taxing issue for downtown property
owners By Chris Graham/AFP The
downtown-revitalization effort in Marion in Southwest Virginia got a
shot in the arm from the mid-1990s decision of property owners in
the central-business district to pay part of the freight themselves.
"It wasn't the easiest thing in the world to convince people to want
to do, of course," said Ken Heath, the executive director of the
Marion Downtown Revitalization Association ...
NOTES FROM THE PRESS: Politics
notebook By Chris Graham/AFP
Twenty-six legislators - 25 Republicans and one Republican-leaning
independent - received perfect scores on their Family Foundation
Action 2004-2005 General Assembly report cards. "A perfect score on
the report card demonstrates to Virginia families a commitment to
the principles upon which our Commonwealth stands," said Victoria
Cobb, president of The Family Foundation Action.
EYE ON VIRGINIA: More mudslinging in LG primary
battle By Chris Graham/AFP The
Sean Connaughton for lieutenant governor campaign feels that it is
being bullied by rival Bill Bolling into silence regarding a
Washington Examiner op-ed that raised issue with the state
senator's affiliation with an insurance company that went out of
business in a cloud of suspicion. The Bolling campaign, for its
part, says that the Connaughton camp's efforts to make an issue of
the op-ed ...
EYE ON THE VALLEY: One primary ... or the
other By Chris Graham/AFP Yes,
Virginia voters. You really are limited to voting in one party
primary or the other. "No person shall vote for the candidates of
more than one party," state-code section 24.2-530 makes clear as
day. The Democratic Party and Republican Party state primaries on
the schedule for June 14 are a mere two weeks away - meaning that
it's time for those planning to go out to the polls to start
thinking about the party lever that they most want to
pull.

Our View
If you think the media is biased toward liberals - and many these
days do - don't complain about it.
Don't write letters to the editor about it.
Don't e-mail other bloggers for the sake of commiserating about
it.
Do something about it.
And when we say do something, we're not talking about what we've
seen to date from the millions of self-appointed media critics who
have popped up in literally every corner of the United States.
Oh, no. Media criticism is far too easy.
Here's what we suggest - take up your notebook.
And your pen.
Call sources.
Visit the courthouse to do some research.
Attend a political rally or two or 100.
Walk the streets, talk to merchants and consumers.
Chat up people at the local social-services office.
This is what the villified so-called liberal media does.
Day after day after day after day.
After all, somebody has to put out the original reporting for the
rest of the world to slam as being biased.
One word of warning: The pay is not going to be enough to sustain
more than a no-frills way of life.
(Funny how that never makes it above the fold, isn't it?)
The old saw about walking in somebody else's shoes for a day
might really open your eyes - if you let it.
