  • 50 years ago, Feb. 11, 1954: Two city detectives smash Birmingham's biggest lottery house in two raids, arresting four people and confiscating automobile.

    Zoo board agrees to hold fund drive to raise $250,000 as starter for zoo in Birmingham.

  • 25 years ago, Feb. 11, 1979: Crack Iranian troops sweep into air force training base in Tehran and fire on anti-government demonstration by cadets.

    Downtown Area Runabout System begins operation after Mayor David Vann signs contracts with Birmingham Transit Authority.

    From Alabama Department of Archives and History:

  • 154 years ago, Feb. 11, 1850: Alabama Legislature creates Hancock County from portion of Walker County. New county named for Gov. John Hancock of Massachusetts. In 1858, name changed to Winston to honor Alabama Gov. John A. Winston.
