  • 50 years ago, Oct. 7, 1954: E.L. "Red" Cook found guilty of first degree murder in 1950 killing at club he operated in Phenix City.

    Alabama Supreme Court blocks Russell County Circuit Judge John B. Hicks from replacing names in jury box. Hicks has been relieved of jurisdiction over cases arising from Phenix City cleanup.

  • 25 years ago, Oct. 7, 1979: Effort to return David G. Bronner to head of combined Retirement Systems of Alabama hits snag when Teachers Retirement System board refuses to hire Bronner on permanent basis.

    Birmingham Water Works Board votes to rehire all 77 employees who struck over board's refusal to hold union recognition election.

  • 241 years ago, Oct. 7, 1763: In aftermath of French and Indian War, Britain's King George III establishes colonies of East and West Florida. West Florida's northern boundary set at 31st parallel.
