President Bush focusing on wrong kind of security

John Thompson; Edgewood;

Re: President Bush's State of the Union speech (TNT, 1-29):

Security is about more than international conflict. To average citizens like me, security also means economic security.

Security means knowing that my president understands the struggles of middle-class families as we try to put food on the table and books in the children's backpacks. And it means knowing that my kids will not inherit federal budget deficits because millionaires needed a tax cut.

I need to feel secure in my country's leadership and my family's economic future. After the president's speech, I feel neither.

JOHN THOMPSON
