Clean-up crew commended
To the editor:
I
would like to commend the clean-up crew who removed 99 percent
of the litter from the stretch of Highway 19 in Lauderdale
County between Whynot and the state line. I have traveled this
area a number of times over the last 10 years, and I’m sure it
took a lot of dedicated people a long time to remove what must
have been tons of trash from the roadside to reveal the hidden
natural beauty. I didn’t think it could be
done.

More on
women in combat
To the editor:
Craig Ziemba
thinks women should not be in combat? Edward J. Giovanetti,
politically correct, thinks, “Why not?” What do women think?
We’ll all find out the day that our daughters are drafted.

Patriotic show a big success
To the
editor:
I want to thank everybody that made our
kindergarten program at West Lauderdale a huge success. During
this time in the United States, we wanted to show our
patriotism. We thought that by having a patriotic program that
we could show our support for our country, President Bush and
all our military. The play was fantastic and the children did
wonderful. There was a sense of pride in them and
the
audience.
We wanted to share some of this
experience with the people of Meridian and surrounding areas
by way of TV news. For some reason the people we talked to at
WTOK and WMDN weren’t too interested in it. I think it’s time
to start looking for the positive in the world and stop
dwelling on the negative things. This play was a “positive”
thing and I hate that we didn’t get to share it with
everyone.
But, again to those parents and students who
participated in the show, I say thank you, thank you, thank

Salute our
troops
To the editor:
Last Saturday, evening a
wonderful thing happened in Meridian — my son, along with 22
other sons and daughters, landed at Key Field after serving a
tour of duty in the war in Iraq. A war that liberated millions
of people, some of whom don’t even know it yet. These
returning troops had served in and played a significant role
of spreading freedom throughout the world. The reception they
received was somewhat disappointing in numbers but not in the
few who waited in the hanger and got entertained by the
Milwaukee plane with their fly over. You had to be there to
appreciate the thrill.
Please understand, as I write
this letter we still have sons and daughters who stand the
possibility of coming home with an honor guard escort.
Unfortunately, rather than praise for our troops in the local
paper, we got an article from the editor of this once
respectable paper that degraded the entire unit, minimized
their mission and demoralized those of us who know the truth.
What he wrote was in bad taste, bad timing and a cheap shot.
Why not show our returning troops the gratitude and adulation
they deserved.
So many of us in Meridian don’t realize
what a grand force of military fighting men we have here. But
as a father of one of them, I know all of the missions they
have been on, and I know of all the success. From Cuba, Haiti,
Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq, I can only wonder if their
commanders had been so corrupt, how could they have been so
effective?
