Volunteer border patrollers are misguided

Friday, October 7, 2005 11:30 PM CDT

This is a letter to the volunteer border patrollers.

Our Congress hopes that you and others who are patrolling the border by helicopter, all-terrain vehicle and horseback will continue in your attempt to stop illegal immigrants from crossing the border with every imagined governmental and civilian resource. Why? Well, this ridiculous and futile activity takes the onus off of our congressmen to enforce the laws that they've already passed that forbid employment of illegal immigrants.

You would serve our nation better by ”riding herd“ on political action committee employers to whom our congressional royalty pledge allegiance in return for their powerful vote - the folks who are permitted by our brazen congressmen to continue to hire these illegal immigrants.

You could reveal the greatest scandal in recent history by directing your efforts and resources toward the real source of the problem, which no one has the guts to address: the standing invitation from U.S. industry and commerce, at the pleasure of our congressmen, to illegal immigrants to ”come on over.“

I know that all of you, one of these days, will find that the likes of Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., and other politicians who've joined you for photo ops out on the border are ”taking you for a ride“ - and surreptitiously ”steering“ you away from the problem.

I hope it won't be long before you see that you are being ”herded.“

Armond ”Si“ Simmons

Pell City, Ala.
