Kid's Kastle is great; make Lakeside Park better with beach

11-07-2001

Editor, St. Clair Times:

I read with pleasure Laura Nation's "Feature" article, "Kids have their own castle in Pell City" wherein she described our community's kids basking in the enjoyment of the new community conceived and constructed "Kids Kastle". She states, "It took planning and effort from more than 2,000 Pell City residents to make the playground a reality. Throughout the five-day construction period, about 2,400 volunteers worked to make the project a successful one." Many are indebted to those who had the foresight to see the need for such a wonderful project for our kids and to get about seeing it done. It's a perfect and appropriate addition to Lakeside Park. I would guess that other communities will learn of this feat and attempt to duplicate this wonderful project.

However, what other communities do not have and for which they would give an arm and a leg is a "Kids Kastle" that overlooks the most beautiful lake in the South. A lake of which considerable prime shoreline is owned by the city of Pell City thanks to our city forefathers at the time the lake was constructed who had the foresight to envision future shoreline value to the community in the form of lake related recreation areas and facilities. Lakeside Park is a great example of the realization of that vision.

But have we even scratched the surface of what was envisioned and can be envisioned now in capitalizing on that "jewel" sitting in the lap of this beautiful lakeside city begging for ingenuity of utilitarianism that other cities would covet.

Lakeside Park, as truly nice as it is with the pavilions, boat ramps, fishing pier and bridge, picnic areas, walking trail and now, "Kids Kastle" could become but a great adjunct to something even greater. That's would be "Pell City Beach." "Pell City Beach" could become the home of the largest white sand beach in Alabama, north of Gulf Shores. A more beautiful setting for "Pell City Beach" could not possibly be found than that situated on the massive shoreline at the "point" behind our Civic Center and adjacent to the recreation complex and "Lakeside Park;" a unique recreational area for the entire family.

For a better understanding, take a look at http://psysim.www7.50megs.com/html/pcbeach.htm.

Let's do it!!!
