I'm wondering if Mary N. Coleman, Ltr to Ed, "Racial profiling has
no valid justification", May 7 who spoke of those who are stopped
for "driving while black" might have some advice for black New York cab
drivers who refuse to pick up black fares for fear of being robbed or killed
based on their experience in the business; clearly a case of the
"driving while black" cab drivers resorting to the same protective profiling
tactics that police are accused of using in an effort to protect the public.
Could it be that humans, based on their life experiences acquire a subconscious
profiling mechanism that prompts them as to "fight or flight" in conformance
with nature's axiom "the fittest shall survive" and basically rely on these
learned senses to "profile" that which one perceives a danger? Mary,
myself and New York cab drivers use this mechanism just as do our law enforcement
personnel. It's called "Human Nature".
